Dojo News for August

We are all back from a hot week in Tacoma in good spirit.  Summer Camp has a way of strengthening practice and community in spite of, and maybe because of, the many challenges it offers.  Congratulations again to Sara who passed her sandan test in an exemplary way.  I think we all share a feeling of pride in her accomplishment as we do for our young students, Sabrina and Niko, who braved camp for the first time.  They did not hold back and took every class they could.  Special thanks go to Joanne who worked to ensure that the camp went smoothly.  Every time I needed something, she was there seemingly in advance of my thought!

We are looking ahead to a long and hot summer.  Please make sure that you are responsible for remaining hydrated.  In this weather it is a good idea to keep a bottle of water at the edge of the mat.  If you need to take a drink during class, ask Sensei quietly, make a bow in seiza at the edge of the mat, turn and drink, then turn and bow again before returning to practice.

Looking Ahead:

  • Saturday afternoon, August 18, RC will be leading a self defense course at the dojo.  It will last about 4 hours and be FREE to participants.  Support from dojo members will be needed.  If you know of anyone who would be interested in attending the course, please let RC know at rcmiles61@sbcglobal.net.   Our intent is primarily to educate people in the area of self defense but also to offer an opportunity to introduce people to the dojo itself and hopefully promote interest in aikido.
  • September 13-16,  Women’s Aikido Camp, Santa Fe, NM.   Contact: www.aikidoofkohala.org
  • There will be a seminar at Daiwa in the Fall – date to be announced – Roo Heins will be the guest instructor.
  • Juba Nour will again be at San Diego Aikikai in December.

Stay cool, see you at the dojo,
– Sensei
